Who we Are

The Sustainable Design Services group is one of First-Q’s Competence Centres, dedicated to bioclimatic design, passive systems, comfort in buildings and outdoor spaces, as well as the integration of renewable energy technologies in the built environment.

As Architecture is the primary dimension of sustainable design, we fluently speak that same language: our own team of engineers is led by architects!

Our Services

A performance-based concern, sustainable design must be supported by a highly interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. We provide all required skills, specialist tools, counselling and dialogue to create outstanding global solutions for the environmental-conscious client. We can also assist in finding down to earth answers for each design context: how much insulation is needed that is cost-effective? Where is the break-even point? What are the penalties for fixed solar shading? Are movable shades required? How many hours of daylight can be achieved? What is its economic equivalent? We provide guidance for architectural integration, interface with manufacturers, draw specs and customised detailing, and integrate energy and building services suited for each design context and phase.

Bioclimatic Design

Bioclimatic design can be extremely effective if introduced in the early stages of a design effort. Some passive solar design strategies are counted among the most inexpensive, robust and agreeable applications of renewable energy. But although simple in principle, good solar design can become complex in the making. Accuracy is required in the balancing of dynamic components with distinct strengths and qualities. A very close collaboration between the architectural design team and the energy consultants is essential for a successful implementation.

Integrated Renewable Energy Systems

The integration of active energy technologies in the built environment is an increasingly attractive option due to the freedom from the environmental impacts that usually exist in green-field renewable energy installations.

Building integrated schemes is an especially clean and eco-friendly contribution towards renewable energy targets, opening architectural and business opportunities.

Dynamic Computer Simulations

Integrated Sustainable Design generally requires high-level computer simulations to quantify the variable natural resources and the adaptive systems needed for their harnessing. Design validation and optimisation demand accurate state of the art tools for:

•    artificial and natural lighting
•    spatial visualisation
•    thermal comfort
•    energy performance
•    airflow
•    air quality

We make a point of using simple yet accurate tools that yield proven results suited for each design context and phase, resulting in fast, low-cost and easy to interpret answers for designers and clients.
